Menopause & the Change of Life

Menopause is a time of change for women. In the lead-up to menopause your ovaries are less efficient leading to dramatic changes to your hormonal levels. Eventually your periods and ovulation will stop. You are said to be postmenopausal if you have had no period for 12 months in a row. This usually occurs naturally with the average age being 51 but it can also occur as the result of medication or surgery.

HOW YOU MAY FEEL

Every woman will experience menopause in her own way.

In the years before your final period your oestrogen levels vary which may cause hot flushes, changes in the frequency and heaviness of menstrual periods and vaginal dryness. Mood changes such as tearfulness, mood swings, lack of energy, anxiety or panic attacking and feeling down is common. You may experience difficulty sleeping and report difficulties in memory and concentration. Around this time your sexual feelings and desires may changes and some women become less interested in sex.

Some women are still able to conceive during this transition period so it is important to continue to use contraception if you don’t want to become pregnant until you have had no period for at least 12 months

Remember, any bleeding in the years after menopause is not normal and needs to be investigated.
